I had the eye opening experience of going to cSpace KING EDWARD a couple weeks ago for an artist’s date! I was meeting Barb Marshall, aka @ritewhileyoucan, from letter writing socials, click here for website, as she was the winner of the Valentine’s Day Contest and she wanted to talk about featuring Santosha Poetry on her Blog!! (stay tuned)
I arrived on a freezing cold Feb 13, not knowing where I was going or that I was stepping into a vibrant part of Calgary’s past, present and future. cSpace is located in South Calgary, at the historical King Edward school. The space is a mix of young and old and currently surrounded by construction it was a delight to see how they’ve given new life to a piece of Calgary’s history!
At the former front entrance of the school are zillions of hour glasses hanging from the ceiling. Each are connected to hand typed tags on the wall. The hour glasses flip over according to how long it takes to ‘put in my dentures’ among other things, it’s an intricate installation and reminds me of my own poetic pendants, in a way, mindfulness everywhere here. I want to go back as I heard there is a certain time during the day when the hour glasses all flip over in unison.
I had no idea how many cool artists work in this building! After we had our coffee at Barrow Cafe, Barb was headed to her writer’s guild office where writers come to write. I explored on my own. It’s heartwarming to see how they have reused parts from the historical school and transformed the wood gym floor into a corner wall feature.

I wandered into an art studio classroom which was so full of life from the sculptures on the walls to the real old school black slate chalkboards. The easels were all set up and waiting for students as the instructor welcomed me in to have a look. The vibe of this classroom is like stepping into a New York City starving artist’s loft studio.
By no means is this a full description of the space as I think you discover something new every time you set foot in the building.
There’s a letter press company that wasn’t open when I was there, so I need to go back, there’s the alliance Francaise of Calgary, the Making 7 Treaty Cultural Society, theater groups, a publisher association, boys washroom and the girls is a crisp white subway tile with all the charm of yesteryear but all the modern conveniences of now.
A sitting area outside the artisan gift shop, acted as a teleconference room as two artists talked to someone on the other end collaborating creating in their own community.
The gift shop clerk was working on some sheep’s wool hearts for their Valentine Dateless event taking place the next day, which was to include live music, workshops, etc. What a cool place to spend Valentine’s Day!
The building is also host to a farmer’s market taking place each week (please check website to confirm times). In winter they hold market inside but summer they set up in the school courtyard, I can’t wait to check that out! From later looking on Instagram, it looks like they may have yoga classes outside?
Make a point to go here Calgarians and visitors to Calgary! cSpace is a much needed cultural hub in this city!
